Remove a password from a PDF you are allowed to open
Banks, payroll systems and insurers send statements encrypted with your PAN, your date of birth or a customer number. That is sensible for delivery and a nuisance afterwards, because an encrypted file cannot be merged, split, compressed, searched or converted until it is decrypted. Unlocking once, with the password you already have, makes the document usable with every other tool.
The password is not optional here, and that is deliberate. This tool decrypts a file using a key you provide. It does not guess, it does not attempt to crack, and it will simply report failure if the password is wrong. If you cannot open the document in a PDF reader, nothing here will change that.
Keep the unlocked copy somewhere sensible. It is a plain PDF now, readable by anyone who finds it, which is the whole point but also worth remembering if the document is a salary slip or a bank statement. Many people unlock, do the work they needed, and then protect the result again with a password of their own.
Simple, practical guidance
How to use Unlock PDF
You supply the password, the document is decrypted with it, and an unrestricted copy is written out. The password is required: this decrypts a file you can already open, it does not break into one you cannot.
- 1
Choose the protected PDF.
- 2
Enter the correct opening password.
- 3
Confirm that you are authorized to remove protection.
- 4
Unlock and download the unrestricted copy.
Get a better result
Decryption unwraps the container and leaves the pages alone, so the unlocked copy is byte for byte equivalent in appearance to the protected original.
Know how your file is handled
Decryption runs on our server because the required routines are not available in a browser. The file and the password are sent over an encrypted connection, used for the job, and then discarded.
Check before you share
There is no way to use this without the correct password. It is built for documents you own or are authorised to handle, not for opening files whose password you do not have.

Unlock PDF FAQ
Why the password is required, what unlocking enables, and when you should not use this.
How do I remove a password from a PDF?
Upload the protected file, enter its opening password, confirm that you are authorised to remove the protection, then download the unlocked copy. If the PDF opens without a password and only blocks printing or copying, leave the password box empty. The result opens and prints without any prompt.
Do I need to know the password?
Only when the PDF refuses to open without one. That kind of file is decrypted with the password you supply, and a wrong one simply fails. A PDF that opens for anybody but forbids printing is a different case: the restriction sits in an owner password, the opening password is empty, so you leave the box empty and the restrictions come off.
My Aadhaar PDF asks for a password. What is it?
UIDAI builds it from your own details rather than letting you choose one: the first four letters of your name in capitals, exactly as printed on the card, followed by your year of birth in four digits. A Pankaj Kapoor born in 1980 would type PANK1980. Short names and initials follow the same rule on the letters that are there, so read the name off the card rather than guessing. Once it opens, this tool removes the password for good.
Can this open a PDF whose password I lost?
No. It does not guess or crack anything. For a file you genuinely cannot open, the only real options are asking whoever sent it to resend it or to tell you the password.
Why do I need to unlock before merging or compressing?
Because an encrypted PDF hides its page structure, and every other tool needs to read that structure to do its job. Unlock once and the document works normally everywhere. Merge PDF
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
It is entirely normal for your own documents, such as a bank statement encrypted with your own PAN. Removing protection from someone else's document, or from material licensed to you with restrictions, is not what this tool is for.
Is my password sent to your server?
The file and the password are both sent over an encrypted connection, because decryption cannot be performed in a browser for this format. They are used for that one job and then discarded, and nothing is retained afterwards.
Does unlocking change the document?
No. Only the encryption is removed. Pages, text, images, form fields and annotations are all identical in the unlocked copy.
My bank statement opens with a password. Can I convert it to Excel directly?
Yes, Bank Statement to Excel accepts the password on the same screen, so you can skip unlocking for that specific job. Bank Statement to Excel
Can I put a different password on afterwards?
Yes. Unlock the file, do whatever work you needed, then apply a password of your own with Protect PDF before sharing it onward. Protect PDF
What about a PDF that opens freely but blocks printing?
Leave the password box empty and unlock it. That restriction is an owner password, which never stopped anyone reading the file, so no password has to be known to lift it. The unlocked copy prints, copies and annotates normally. Only do this with documents you are entitled to use that way.
