Add page numbers to a PDF, or stamp any text on every page

Court filings, tender submissions, project reports and bound dissertations all tend to arrive with the same requirement: every page numbered, in a specified position, usually with a total. Doing that by hand in an editor means touching every sheet. Here you set the format once and it is applied across the range you choose.

The format box is not limited to a bare number. Page 1 of 10 is the common choice, but you can stamp the date, the file name or a short line of your own text, which makes this useful for marking a document as a draft, adding a reference number, or labelling copies for circulation.

Two settings are worth thinking about before you download. Position, because a number in the bottom centre can collide with an existing footer, and the preview is the only way to be sure. And page range, because a cover sheet usually should not be numbered, which means starting the sequence from page two while still counting from one.

Simple, practical guidance

How to use Add Page Numbers

The number is drawn as a new piece of text on top of each page you select. Because it is added rather than substituted, the page content below it is never rewritten.

  1. 1

Upload the PDF you want to number.

  2. 2

Choose a format such as "Page 1 of 10" or type your own text.

  3. 3

Pick the position, size and colour, and which pages to number.

  4. 4

Select Add page numbers and download the PDF.

The stamp sits above the existing page, which is left exactly as it was. No artwork is recompressed and the added text stays sharp and selectable at any zoom.

Know how your file is handled

Numbering is performed by your browser. The document is opened from your disk, the text is drawn locally, and the stamped file is saved from your device without an upload.

The built-in font covers Latin characters, so a number or label written in Devanagari or another non-Latin script is drawn as a question mark. Stick to Latin text and digits here.

Add Page Numbers FAQ

Formats, positions, starting from a page other than one, and which characters the font supports.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Upload the file, pick a number format, choose where on the page it should sit and which pages to cover, then select Add page numbers. The stamped document downloads to your device.

Can I show the total, as in Page 3 of 20?

Yes. Choose that format and the total is filled in from the document page count automatically, so you do not have to type it or update it if the file changes.

Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?

Yes. Set the range so the cover sheet is skipped, which is the usual requirement for reports and dissertations where the title page is not counted in the visible sequence.

Can I number only some of the pages?

Yes. The pages box takes a range such as 3-20, or a list such as 1,4,9-12, and only those pages are stamped. Leave it empty to number every page. This is how you skip a cover sheet or an annexure that is numbered already.

Can I stamp text other than a number?

Yes. The date, the file name or any short line of your own text can be applied to every page in the range, which is how people mark a document as a draft or add a reference number to each sheet.

Why do my Hindi or Tamil characters show as question marks?

The font built into this tool covers Latin letters and digits only, so characters from other scripts have no glyph to draw. For non-Latin text on a page, add it in the PDF editor, which handles Indic scripts. PDF Editor

Will the number cover up something on the page?

It can, if the page already has a footer in that spot. The preview shows the stamp in place before you commit, so move the position or reduce the size if there is a collision.

Can I change the size, colour and font position?

Yes. Position, size and colour are all adjustable, and you can see each change in the preview. Smaller sizes in a margin corner are the safest choice on a dense document.

Does numbering reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. The text is drawn as a new layer above the existing page content, which is copied across untouched. Nothing is rasterised or recompressed.

Should I number before or after merging?

After. Merge the documents into their final order first, then number once so the sequence runs correctly across the whole file. Merge PDF

Is my document uploaded to be numbered?

No. The stamping happens in your browser tab, so the file stays on your own device throughout.
