Understanding why this conversion is hard makes the results much less frustrating. A Word file describes a document: this is a heading, this is a paragraph, this is a table with four columns. A PDF describes a printed page: put these glyphs at these coordinates in this font. Converting from PDF to Word means reading the coordinates and inferring the document back out of them, which is informed reconstruction rather than translation.
So the outcome depends heavily on the source. A contract, letter or report with ordinary paragraphs and a clear single column converts very well and is usually ready to edit immediately. A magazine spread with text wrapping round images, a government form made of boxes, or a page with four columns and sidebars gives the converter far less to go on, and you will spend time tidying.
Two things to check before you start. If the PDF is a scan, there is no text in it for the converter to find, so enable OCR where that option appears or run OCR PDF first. And if all you need is the words rather than the layout, extracting plain text is faster and completely reliable.

Do images come across into the Word file?

What about tables?

Will fonts stay the same?
Where the font is available on the machine opening the document, yes. If it is not installed, Word substitutes something similar and line breaks can shift slightly as a result.
