Remove a watermark from your own PDF

There is a real difference between two things that look identical on screen. A watermark added by Acrobat, Word or our own Watermark tool is stored as its own layer or annotation, separate from the page content, and a layer can be identified and deleted cleanly. A watermark that was flattened into the page, or that was part of the paper when the document was scanned, is just pixels mixed in with everything else.

That is why this tool is honest about its limits rather than promising to strip anything. If the mark was applied as a watermark, it comes off and the page underneath is untouched. If it was burned in, no amount of processing can separate it from the content without damaging the content, and you will see that in the preview immediately.

Please only use this on documents you own or have permission to change. Watermarks on reports, stock images, exam papers and paid templates are there to mark ownership, and removing one from somebody else's content is not what this tool is for.

Simple, practical guidance

How to use Remove Watermark

This looks for the layer a watermark was added as and deletes that layer. Whether it can find one depends on how the mark was applied, so the preview is the step that tells you if it worked.

  1. 1

Upload the PDF with the watermark.

  2. 2

Confirm that you own the document or have permission to change it.

  3. 3

    Select Remove watermark.

  4. 4

Check the preview and save the cleaned PDF.

Get a better result

Only the watermark layer is dropped. Every other element on the page keeps its exact position, colour and compression, and the text underneath stays selectable.

Know how your file is handled

The document is examined and rewritten inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, which also means a confidential draft can be cleaned without leaving your machine.

Check before you share

A watermark baked into a scanned image, or typed onto the page as ordinary text, is indistinguishable from the real content and is left alone. Only marks added as a watermark layer can be found.

Questions people ask

Remove Watermark FAQ

Which watermarks can be found, which cannot, and why permission matters here.

How do I remove a watermark from a PDF?

Upload the document, confirm that you are allowed to modify it, then select Remove watermark. Check the preview that appears before saving, because that is where you will see whether the mark was a separate layer or part of the page.

Why is the watermark still there after processing?

Because it was not stored as a watermark. If the mark was flattened into the page artwork or was already present on the paper when the document was scanned, it is ordinary page content and cannot be told apart from the text and images around it.

Which kinds of watermark can actually be removed?

Marks added as a watermark layer, an annotation or an optional content group, which is what Acrobat, Word, LibreOffice and our own Watermark tool produce. Those are stored separately from the page and can be dropped without touching anything else.

Will removing the watermark damage the page underneath?

No. When the mark is a separate layer, deleting it leaves the rest of the page exactly as it was, including selectable text and image quality. Nothing is redrawn or recompressed.

Can I remove a watermark from a scanned document?

Generally no. In a scan, everything on the page is a single image, so the watermark and the text share the same pixels. Separating them would mean reconstructing the text that the mark crosses.

Is it legal to remove a watermark?

It depends entirely on the document. Taking a draft marker off your own report is routine. Removing an ownership mark from material that belongs to someone else, such as a paid template or a licensed image, is not something you should use this for.

Does the marked file leave my device?

No. The file is inspected and rewritten by code running in your browser tab, so it never leaves your device.

Can I remove just one of several watermarks?

The tool removes the watermark layers it finds rather than offering a per mark selection. If you need finer control over what stays, open the file in the PDF editor and cover or delete elements individually. PDF Editor

I want to replace the watermark with a different one. How?

Remove the existing mark first, then apply the new one with Watermark PDF, where you can set the text, placement, size and opacity. Watermark PDF

Can this remove a Confidential stamp typed into the header?

No. Text typed into a header is normal page text, not a watermark, so it is treated as content. Edit it out in the PDF editor, or redact it if it needs to be genuinely removed. Redact PDF
