Convert a PDF into an EPUB ebook
Reading a PDF on a phone is miserable and the reason is structural. The page is a fixed A4 rectangle, so you either see the whole page at an unreadable size or you zoom in and pan sideways along every line. EPUB solves this by throwing the page away: the text flows, so it rewraps to the screen you are holding, and you can change the font size without any panning at all.
That is also precisely why the design does not come with it. Converting to EPUB means extracting the words and their structure and discarding the fixed layout. For a novel, a report or a textbook chapter, that is an unambiguous improvement. For a magazine, an annual report full of infographics, or a form, it destroys the thing that made the document work.
Good source material has a real text layer and a sensible reading order, ideally with headings that can become chapters. Two column academic PDFs often interleave, because the words are stored in page order rather than reading order. Scanned books contain no text at all until OCR has run, so start there if you can select nothing in your reader.
Simple, practical guidance
How to use PDF to EPUB
The text is lifted out of the fixed pages and rebuilt as a flowing ebook, so it can rewrap to any screen size. That change of model is the whole purpose, and it is also why the layout does not survive.
- 1
Upload the PDF.
- 2
Enter book details such as title and author when available.
- 3
Choose reflowable or fixed-layout output if offered.
- 4
Convert, download, and check the EPUB in an ebook reader.
Get a better result
A book with a clear reading order, proper headings and a real text layer converts most successfully, producing chapters that navigate correctly in a reader.
Know how your file is handled
The restructuring runs on our server, since building an EPUB needs tooling unavailable to a browser. Your file is deleted once the ebook has been generated.
Check before you share
Heavily designed fixed pages, multi column academic papers and scanned books do not reflow meaningfully, because there is no reliable reading order to follow. Those need OCR or structural cleanup first.
Questions people ask
PDF to EPUB FAQ
Why reflow matters, which books convert well, scanned pages, and reading the result on a device.
How do I convert a PDF to EPUB?
Upload the PDF, fill in the title and author if those fields appear, choose reflowable output, then convert and open the result in an ebook reader to check the chapters.
Why convert to EPUB at all?
Because EPUB text reflows. On a phone or an e-reader you can set a comfortable font size and read without zooming or scrolling sideways, which a fixed PDF page cannot do.
Will the layout and design be preserved?
No, and that is intentional. Reflowing text means discarding the fixed page layout. Documents whose design carries meaning, such as magazines and forms, are better left as PDFs.
Which PDFs convert well?
Single column books with a real text layer, clear headings and a straightforward reading order. Novels, reports and textbook chapters generally convert cleanly into navigable ebooks.
Can I convert a scanned book?
Not usefully until it has a text layer. Run OCR PDF over it first, then convert the searchable version. Without that step there is no text to reflow. OCR PDF
Why are the paragraphs jumbled?
The PDF most likely uses multiple columns. Text is stored in the order it was drawn on the page rather than the order you read it, so columns can interleave during extraction.
Will the EPUB work on a Kindle?
Current Kindle devices and the Send to Kindle service accept EPUB files. Older models may need a conversion step, which the Kindle tools handle for you.
Do images come across?
Pictures are carried into the ebook, though they are placed in the flow rather than at fixed positions, so they appear near the text they belonged to rather than exactly where they sat on the page.
Does my book go to a server to be converted?
Yes. Building an EPUB needs tooling that cannot run in a browser, so the PDF is processed on our server and removed once your download is ready.
How do I check the result?
Open it in our in-browser EPUB reader, which shows the chapter navigation and lets you confirm the text flows properly before you move it to a device. EPUB Reader
