Why we called it Big PDF Tools
The name came from the complaint we kept running into. Free PDF websites are genuinely useful right up to the moment your file is large, and then every one of them stops you at a size cap. The reason is always the same: your document has to reach their server before anything can happen, and bandwidth and storage cost them money.
So we built the tools the other way round wherever the format allows it. 21 of our 41 tools do the whole job inside your browser tab, on your own processor, with the file read straight off your disk. There is no upload step to wait through and no megabyte limit written into a pricing page. A 400 MB scanned tender document merges exactly the way a two page invoice does.
That one decision carries a second benefit we did not design for but have come to care about more. If the file is never sent anywhere, there is no copy of your contract, salary slip or medical report sitting on somebody else's server waiting to be deleted. You can disconnect your network and the browser tools keep working.
We are honest about the tools that do need a server
The other 21 tools cannot work this way, and we would rather say so plainly than hide it in a footnote. Converting a PDF to Word needs an Office compatible layout engine. Recognising text in a scan needs an OCR engine. Recompressing images needs codecs a browser does not expose. None of that can run in a tab today.
For those tools your file is sent over an encrypted connection, processed, and removed once your download has been produced. Every tool page states which of the two applies to it before you upload anything, in the panel under the steps, and the dropzone on each tool says it again. We think you should know which kind of tool you are using without having to read a policy.
Built for the documents people here actually handle
Most PDF toolkits are built in and for somewhere else, which shows the moment you try to do ordinary Indian paperwork with them. We work on the documents in front of us: bank statements that arrive encrypted with your PAN and need to become a spreadsheet, Aadhaar and PAN numbers that have to come out of a file before it is shared, GST invoices and rent agreements and salary slips, forms that want a scanned marksheet as a single PDF.
That is also why PDF Maker ships with more than a thousand templates aimed at real local paperwork rather than generic business stationery, and why the editor can set Hindi and other Indian scripts properly instead of turning them into question marks.
How we pay for it
The tools are free, and the free ones are not crippled trials. There is no watermark on anything you download, no account needed to use a tool, and no daily limit on how many files you can process. Advertising covers the running costs.
Big PDF Tools Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription that removes the ads, raises limits on the server side tools and unlocks a set of premium templates and fonts in PDF Maker. There are no one time purchases and nothing is sold separately: if a template is in the premium set, a Pro subscription covers it. You can cancel at any time and keep using every free tool afterwards.
Who we are
Big PDF Tools is a small independent project based in Patna, Bihar. There is no venture funding behind it and no sales team. The same people who write the code answer the email, which is slower than a support department but tends to produce better answers.
There is a website and an Android app, and a Pro subscription bought in either one works in both. If something is broken, missing or simply annoying, telling us is the fastest way to get it changed. A fair share of what is on the site now exists because somebody wrote in and asked for it.
