Password protect a PDF before you send it
Encrypting a PDF is worth doing for the ordinary cases it actually handles well: a salary slip going by email, a scanned passport sent to a travel agent, a board pack shared with ten people, a medical report forwarded to a relative. If the message goes to the wrong address or the attachment is forwarded without thinking, the file is still a locked file.
It is also worth being realistic about the limits. Once someone has both the document and the password, there is nothing stopping them printing it, screenshotting it or passing it on, because a password controls opening rather than behaviour afterwards. Encryption is a lock on the door, not a rule about what happens inside the room.
The password itself decides whether any of this means anything. A long passphrase is genuinely hard to break, whereas a six digit date is not. Send the password through a different channel from the file, otherwise one compromised inbox gives away both halves. And keep a copy of it somewhere, because a forgotten password on a properly encrypted PDF is not recoverable by us or by anyone else.

How do I password protect a PDF?

What makes a good PDF password?
Length matters more than complexity. A phrase of several unrelated words resists guessing far better than a short string of symbols, and it is easier to pass on accurately. Avoid names, dates of birth and anything already used elsewhere.
Can the password be recovered if I forget it?
No. The document is genuinely encrypted, so there is no master key and no reset. Neither we nor anyone else can open it without the password, which is exactly what makes the protection worth anything. Keep the original unprotected file.
Does a password stop someone printing or copying the document?
Not once they are inside. A password controls who can open the file, not what they do afterwards, so anyone with the password can print, copy and forward it. If content must not travel, remove it from the document instead. Redact PDF
Should I email the password with the file?
No. Sending both in one message defeats the purpose, since anyone who reads that message has everything. Share the password by phone, message or in person, separately from the attachment.
